DOCTRINAL STATEMENTS

The African church holds and maintains the faith, sacrament and discipline of the church of Christ as our Lord Jesus Christ has commanded in the Holy Bible. The Church holds as it’s standard of worship and practices, the Book of by the Conference for the conduct of public worship and ceremonies.

Resolution passed and confirmed by each party and declared by a joint conference on Thursday the 14th day of December 1922.

That this meeting composed of the representatives of the two organizations (The African church bethel and the African church Salem) appointed and empowered to give effect to the late Fredrick Ephraim Williams for reunion date 11th December 1916 both declared the two organizations.

The African church Bethel and the African church Salem are hereby united and now form one organization: THE AFRICAN CHURCH

Whereas the African church founded and established on Sunday 13th October 1901 was divided in 1907 into two sections and was again reunited as The African Church in December 1911.

And whereas The African church has acquired land and built churches and houses for carrying on our work.

“And whereas it is expedient that steps be taken for the better consolidation and better governance of the African Church worldwide.

“And whereas the Clergy and Laity has delegated to the aforesaid joint conference the task of framing the constitution of the African Church worldwide.

“And the Clergy and the Laity of both parties by their representatives met in solemn conclave and at a joint conference severally and jointly proposed the term of a revised constitution of the African Church.

“And whereas The Rt. Revd. Jacob Sylvanus Williams was appointed The Most Reverend, Primate of the African Church.

Now therefore the Clergy and the Laity as aforesaid do solemnly declare and establish this as: “THE CONSTITUTION OF THE AFRICAN CHURCH IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY GHOST, AMEN”

AMENDMENT, 21ST OCTOBER, 1960

Whereas certain of the Clergy and the Laity representing the members of the Churches within the Jurisdiction of The African Church have assembled at Bethlehem Church, Ebute-Meta on 21ist day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand, nine hundred and sixty for the purpose of agreeing upon the revised constitution of the African Church and other regulations.

“And whereas it is expedient that all or some of the provisions of the constitution should be revised and established by the Clergy and the Laity of the African Church out the terms proposed by the aforementioned joint conference.

“Now therefore it is resolved that the Clergy and the Laity so established as foresaid do solemnly declared that all former constitutions, Rules and Regulations are hereby revoked, annulled and abrogated and the present constitution, rules and regulations established and declared: THE CONSTITUTION OF THE AFRICAN CHRUCH.

2nd AMENDED CONSTITUTION, 11 MAY1979

Whereas it was further considered at the joint conference of the Clergy and the Laity assembled at the Cathedral, church of Christ, Calabar on the 11th of May, 1979 that the constitution should be further revised and it was revised.

3rd AMENDED CONSTITUTION, 27TH FEBRUARY 1992

“Whereas there was crisis within The African Church in May 1987 which split the Church into two sections.

ESTABLISHMENT OF & THE AFRICAN CHURCH

The African church was founded on October 13,1901 partly for the reasons for the reasons stated in the preceding paragraphs but definitely as a result of the dispute which arose at breadfruit church, Lagos between the parishioners at the time was no other person than the late Elder(chief)J. k Coker, who was also the people’s warden. .
